What fun and thank you to all who participated!
We did plenty of exercises and rehearsing. Spencer Marsh performed the first movement of Saint-Saens Concertpiece and Bridget Gervais played some of Chabrier’s Larghetto for the master class.
Lunch was on the Drake University Campus and it was a great day for a stroll across the grounds led by students of the Drake horn studio. Participants tried out beautiful new horns brought by Rieman Music.
The recital included: Shaw’s Frippery No. 4, Bach chorales, an arrangement of the Finale from Stravinsky’s Firebird, and Sousa’s El Capitan March. Also through narration and extended horn techniques, students assisted Guinevere McIntyre in a performance of Eric McIntyre’s Jabberwocky from A Visit from the White Rabbit,
Last Monday, Maria Serkin, horn professor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, led a master class at Drake University. Drake horn students as well as area high school hornists participated. We were lucky to snag Des Moines native Maria while she was in the area!
Maria kicked off the master class by playing Marin Marais’s La Basque brilliantly, and filling the horn students in on her musical pathway to this point in her life.
Zach Britton, Ellen Judd, and David Tarte performed in the master class. In working with the students, Maria was a thoughtful and supportive listener, and very engaging in connecting with the students. Everyone got great tips in using air and making music! Thank you Maria, we look forward to seeing and working with you again!

The Drake horn studio is happy to host Maria Serkin, horn professor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, in a master class open to high school students.
Maria Serkin is an active performer and pedagogue who began teaching at UNCSA in 2015. Previously, she was the Lecturer of Horn at the University of Virginia and the Principal Horn of the Charlottesville Symphony. An avid educator, Dr. Serkin has taught horn master classes extending from the Eastman School of Music and The Juilliard School, to the Crescendo Summer Institute in Hungary. Her doctoral research established a progressive method of transposition — a first in the advancement of horn methodology.
“Since I am an active performer, I incorporate relevant performance concepts directly into my teaching. I train my students to become problem solvers — an essential skill for emerging young artists. “
The master class will be held in Room 204 of the Harmon Fine Arts Center on the Drake University campus. Contact Guinevere McIntyre at email@example.com with any questions.
Monday, October 3, 7 to 8:30 PM
Drake hosts woodwind, brass, percussion, and string players for Instrumental All-State audition preparation. Guinevere McIntyre will assist horn students in performing scales, prepared music, and solos for the audition. Students should come prepared to perform the material to enhance the coaching of tone, technique, and musicality. This event is free for all high school students who attend.
Contact Graydon McGrannahan at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Pre-registration is not necessary – just come a bit before 7:00 PM to check in at the lobby of the Harmon Fine Arts Center on the Drake University campus!
